Support for renewable energy production and energy storage for businesses - Date: June 27, 2025.

The call for applications entitled "SUPPORT FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY PRODUCTION AND ENERGY STORAGE FOR ENTERPRISES", announced by the National Energy Agency Private Limited Liability Company (NEÜ Zrt.), acting on behalf of the Ministry of Energy, aims to provide enterprises with investment support for the installation and expansion of energy storage facilities and associated renewable energy production capacity.

Important deadlines

• Submission of applications: in 2025, specific date still under negotiation (expected August)

• Deadline for physical implementation of the project: December 31, 2027.

Candidates:

Based on the current material, the application is open to domestic enterprises, economic organizations and non-profit economic organizations with legal personality, registered office in Hungary or registered office in the territory of the European Economic Area and a branch in Hungary, which have at least one full (365 days) closed business year. The form of support is a non-refundable grant, supplemented by the applicant's own contribution.

Supported activities:

An activity that can be supported independently within the framework of the application is the purchase of energy storage units/facilities (electricity or heat energy). Related activities, but not independently supported, are the following:

• Project preparation : Tender writing, preparation of public procurement procedures, planning and permitting activities, obtaining certificates, preparation of feasibility studies.

• Procurement of implementation-related tools:

• Construction of a complex renewable electricity and/or heat production system for own use, up to 30 percent of eligible costs.

• Construction and integration of measurement and monitoring/control systems. Software licenses for these hardware.

• Measurement site standardization and phase expansion.

• Procurement of necessary technical safety and life and property safety equipment.

• Construction activities required for the installation of an energy storage facility, including site preparation, grid connection, and telecommunication connections.

• Additional activities: Project management, engineering tasks, technical inspection, site preparation, expert activities, information and publicity, conducting public procurement procedures.

• Independently : for the purchase of electrical or thermal energy storage systems,

• As an add-on (only with energy storage):

• installation or expansion of renewable energy systems (e.g. solar panels, wind, heat pumps),

• control software, hardware, measuring systems,

• construction and project management activities.

However, development for housing/housing purposes, energy production intended solely for feeding into the public network or district heating system, and disconnection from the district heating system are not eligible for support. It is important to note that support cannot be provided for projects that have started before the application is submitted.

Grant amount:

A minimum of HUF 10 million and a maximum of HUF 1 billion can be requested per application. The maximum amount of support that can be granted is 50 percent of the eligible costs. The intensity of support depends on the size of the enterprise:

• Micro and small enterprises: 50%

• Medium-sized companies: 40%

• Large companies: 30%

The budget available for supporting applications is HUF 50 billion, of which HUF 25 billion will be allocated to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. The expected number of supported applications is 2,500-2,600.

Technical and Professional Requirements:

The energy storage and renewable energy generation capacity resulting from the support must meet the sustainability and GHG savings criteria of Directive (EU) 2018/2001. At least 75% of the stored energy must come from directly connected renewable energy sources in each year of operation. The capacity of the energy storage unit/facility purchased during the project must reach at least 20% of the total capacity of the renewable energy generation facility/assets available or planned at the project site.

Furthermore:

• Investments can only be made in physically connected systems.

• It can also be connected to a distribution system operator (DSO), a balance group and a trader. Stand-alone operation is also supported.

• At the time of submitting the application, at least one of the following must be available regarding renewable energy production: a renewable energy production unit plan (e.g. concept plan, technical or construction plan, licensed construction plan), the necessary permits, a trial operation report, or operational renewable energy production capacity.
